“I Can See Clearly Now, The Fog Has Lifted”

by James Daniel

In this, the final semester at KSU, before graduating, I have an opportunity to look back to the beginning of this journey to become a professional writer up to the present. I can truly say that overall it has been an exciting journey. I’ve had great instructors and some awesome interactions with fellow students. This class has exposed me to a unique way to practice and exhibit skills related to professional writing. It has helped sharpen my existing skills while introducing some new skills. The greatest benefit was the opportunity to showcase those skills in the formulation of a digital portfolio that will be available to potential job prospects and audiences wanting to know more about me as a writer.

I have learned how to write a variety of creative content pieces. Starting with information about myself that would be beneficial to employers and others. If I return to the job market, my “about me” page, my “interests” page, and my “resume page” in the digital portfolio I created is organized and presented in a way that potential employers and anyone interested can easily access.

I aspire to be a professional writer in the inspirational/spiritual genre of creative writing In my portfolio/blog are several pieces that exhibit my creative skills as a writer and other ancillary skills needed to assimilate into the workplace. Although my goal is to be a freelance writer, I’m not opposed to working as a staff writer for an organization.

Several pieces in my portfolio show the variety of content that I can produce. In my content of choice pieces. There is a poem titled “The Light”, a short story, “One Day in June”, and a research piece. “Music as a Therapeutic Treatment”. Three different genres, each employing different types of skills to produce. Organizational skills are evident in the research piece because a lot of information was present in the original piece but had to be pared down for presentation to a digital audience while not losing the essence of the original p and another piece.  In another piece, “Considering a Pet,” which is an infographic, creative skills are shown, the ability to choose words and pictures to convey a message that is readable and understandable as it is also visually appealing.

The above interest piece in the blog is an example of the ability to determine the interests of an audience and present in both written and pictorial fashion, information pertinent to their interest. Audiences have to be analyzed to ascertain what their interests might be and what information would be desirable to them. The article “Love Good Beer?” Make Your Own,”  is written for a specific audience that is large and distributed across the globe.

I have done interviews before, which were done to gather information needed to make a business proposal, not one where I had to write up for a reading audience interested in the subject matter. Doing an interview for learning and writing an article based on the interview was a very pleasant experience. I learned a lot in the process and now I have more confidence conducting that type of interview. Having interviewed an actual writer working in the genre where I want to work was an awesome experience. In my interview, “To Write, You Have to Have a Passion.” I picked up some valuable insights into the writing process and the profession. I think that this final course I have taken and the entire set of experiences and skills gained from his class carry me a long way on the path of becoming a professional writer. I think it was the ideal course to bring together all the skills that content writers need to be successful in the field.

I see myself in the future getting published and finding a niche unique to my skills and experience and someday soon becoming a successful professional creative writer. I will always value this learning experience. The fog I had at the beginning of this journey has been lifted.
